Which Type of Glue Is Best For the Job at Hand?
Have you ever gone to a hardware store to purchase some glue and once you see the wall of all the types available you just shake your head? It seems there is a certain one for every application anymore. How do you determine which one will work best for you? The biggest problem is many different types will work for many different applications so sifting through all this information can be very time consuming. We have done the hard work for you and have some tips so you can get the best glue for the job every time.
One of the more popular ones is clear household glue. This is a general purpose adhesive that will do a variety of different jobs. It can fix such things as plastic canvas, leather, fabric, and cloth. It works really well, but the biggest drawback it this type of glue does not have a really strong bond. So if you do not need a strong bond this is a very cost effective method of repairing items or doing projects. There are some good and bad points to this glue. It cannot be used on polythene or polypropylene as it will eat the surface. For most things it works well. Watch also getting it on varnish as it will tend to remove varnish as well. Clean up is easy and most of the time a damp cloth and acetone will remove it.
Without a doubt one of the all-time favorites in the United States and the world over is Super glue. This adhesive was originally used by the air force industry and can do wonders as it can produce extremely strong bond with just a little drop. It will instantly bond metals, plastics, glass, ceramics, and pottery. Always wear gloves when using this type of glue. It can actually bond skin together so be very careful with this. If you do get it on you use warm soapy water and a solvent cleaner and gently pull apart. This glue does wonders, but must be handled very carefully.
An epoxy resin is probably one of the newer types of glue that is out on the market. This method uses two equal parts that must be mixed together before use. Part of the mixture contains a hardener that once it dries it forms a bond that is very durable and really strong. The biggest advantage of this type of glue is it can be catered to specific needs. In fact you will find many different types of an epoxy resin on the market catering to a certain need. Some of these epoxies work extremely well while others will breakdown over time. Many times it will depend on the applications that they are used for. Gas and oil will affect most of this epoxy adversely unless otherwise noted on the packages. These for the most part though give a great bond at an affordable price.
Contact glue is another one that you will probably run into that also works really well. Some drawbacks are it is extremely flammable and it bonds on contact. This means that once it bonds it is pretty much going to stay that way. You really only have a few seconds to change it. It is used on wood, rubber, stone, leather and it is water and heat proof. Once dried this is very hard to remove so make sure if you use this glue you want it together. It does not work well on plastic or a polythene item at all so that is something to consider.
Last but not least is acid free glue. This is mostly used for paper, card and some plastics as it is acid free. This really comes in handy if your scrap booking or doing crafts that involves heavy use of paper.
As you can see glue comes in many forms and the key is getting the right one for the job you need. While some give you a temporary hold others will last much longer. They key is knowing how long you need it to last and the material you will be using. Once you have that than finding the perfect glue is much easier. Always to remember to take safety precautions when using any type of glue. This means wearing protective clothing and gloves for your hands. Make sure you are somewhere with adequate ventilation as well. Many of these give off fumes that could make you sick. This is always something you will need to consider.
